Can heat pump save money?

When a heat pump operates at a COP of 4, it delivers 4 units of heat energy using just 1 unit of electrical energy, achieving extremely high energy efficiency. In contrast, conventional electric heating converts electrical energy directly into heat at a nearly 1:1 ratio, meaning 1 unit of electricity only produces 1 unit of heat. Natural gas boilers perform even worse, with an actual thermal efficiency of only around 0.8, so 1 unit of energy input generates less than 0.8 units of usable heat, with significant loss through flue gas and heat dissipation.

From an energy-saving perspective, heat pumps have a clear advantage.
Compared with standard electric heating, a heat pump with COP 4 only consumes one-quarter of the electricity to produce the same amount of heat, cutting energy consumption by approximately 75%. Compared with gas heaters, the energy-saving effect is even more significant, greatly reducing fuel consumption and energy waste. This high efficiency not only lowers daily operating costs but also reduces carbon emissions, making heat pumps a more economical and environmentally friendly heating solution.
