What is heat pump’s Efficiency ? (What is the COP?)

Efficiency of a Heat Pump refer the data of COP.  It stands for Coefficient of Performance.
The higher of the COP, the higher of the heat pump’s efficiency.
It is the key indicator to measure the heating efficiency of a heat pump, defined as:
COP = Useful heating output / Electrical energy input

In simple terms, it shows how much heat the unit produces per unit of electricity consumed.

For example, a COP of 4.0 means the heat pump delivers 4 kW of heat while consuming only 1 kW of electricity.

Why COP Matters

  • Electric resistance heating has a COP close to 1.0
  • Standard air-source heat pumps: COP ≈ 2.5–4.0, Kolant’s air-source heatpump average cop≈4.8
  • Ground-source & water-source heat pumps: COP typically reaches 4.0–6.0 under rated conditions, Kolant’s Ground-source heatpump cop≈5.9(full load), 9.7(patial load)
  Details see: ground source heatpump
Higher COP means higher energy efficiency, lower power consumption, and better operating economy.

Notes

  • COP is for heating mode only.
  • For cooling mode, the efficiency metric is EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio).
  • Actual COP varies with ambient temperature, water outlet temperature, and system design.
