De prestaties in stabiele toestand van een elektrische compressiewarmtepomp bij een bepaalde reeks temperatuuromstandigheden worden aangeduid als de prestatieco\u00ebffici\u00ebnt (COP). Deze wordt gedefinieerd als de verhouding tussen de door de warmtepomp geleverde warmte en de aan de compressor geleverde elektriciteit. <p><br><p>Bij motor- en thermisch aangedreven warmtepompen wordt de prestatie aangegeven door de primaire-energieco\u00ebffici\u00ebnt (PER). De toegevoerde energie is dan de hogere verbrandingswaarde (HHV) van de toegevoerde brandstof. Voor elektrisch aangedreven warmtepompen kan ook een PER worden bepaald door de COP te vermenigvuldigen met het rendement van de stroomopwekking. <p><br>De COP of PER van een warmtepomp hangt nauw samen met het temperatuurverschil, d.w.z. het verschil tussen de temperatuur van de warmtebron en de uitgangstemperatuur van de warmtepomp.
